AWS App Runner is a managed service for deploying web applications and APIs from GitHub, Bitbucket, Amazon ECR, or ECR Public. It builds applications when required, provisions compute resources, deploys services, automatically scales active container instances, and load-balances traffic with TLS encryption. Its audience is teams that want a simpler AWS container deployment path without managing the underlying compute workflow directly. Private VPC connectivity also suits applications that need access to other AWS resources.

Pricing is usage-based rather than organized around comparable fixed monthly plans. AWS lists compute and memory rates, while the published category specifications include 3 GB of ephemeral instance storage. That storage is tied to instances rather than persistent storage. App Runner fits naturally into an AWS-centered environment: GitHub and Bitbucket support source deployments, ECR supports container images, and integrations include CloudWatch Logs, Amazon VPC, AWS IAM, AWS Secrets Manager, and AWS Systems Manager Parameter Store. Automatic or manual deployments give teams control over release behavior.

Availability is the key consideration for new buyers. AWS stopped accepting new customers on April 30, 2026; existing services remain operational, but AWS says it does not plan to add new features and recommends migrating to Amazon ECS Express Mode. That makes App Runner more suitable for existing AWS customers maintaining current services than for organizations choosing a new long-term hosting foundation. Teams already operating App Runner can continue to use its deployment, scaling, logging, networking, and pause/resume capabilities. Teams starting a new project should evaluate the recommended migration path instead.
