avuru obs review
A self-hosted choice for Kubernetes service maps, tracing, and correlated telemetry.

avuru obs is a self-hosted, open-source observability platform for teams operating Kubernetes environments. It combines eBPF-based service discovery with OpenTelemetry ingestion and stores traces, logs, metrics, profiles, and related operational data in ClickHouse. Its web interface covers service maps, distributed tracing, correlated logs, service health, alerting, and optional profiling, making it a fit for teams that want an open-source view of service behavior and dependencies.
The platform's strongest area is connected Kubernetes telemetry. eBPF-based discovery supports service maps, while distributed tracing includes waterfalls and trace comparison. Kubernetes and OpenTelemetry logs can be correlated with traces, and service rate, error, and duration metrics add a concise health view. Continuous eBPF-based CPU profiling extends the picture into performance analysis. Health groups can propagate criticality and dependency state, with webhooks for service-health changes. OpenTelemetry OTLP ingestion, Prometheus, Alertmanager, Sentry SDKs, CNCF Kepler, Slack, and PagerDuty support a broader monitoring workflow.
Deployment is designed for infrastructure-owning teams: avuru obs is distributed through a Helm chart and is intended to run on self-managed infrastructure. The published model is open source with a free plan, while costs are tied to the infrastructure used to operate it. That makes it a practical choice for teams comfortable managing Kubernetes-based observability components and tailoring their operational stack. Teams seeking a hosted service, managed onboarding, or a broader platform beyond Kubernetes should consider a different type of product.
avuru obs pros and cons
- Where it wins
- eBPF service discovery creates Kubernetes service maps
- Tracing, logs, and metrics connect operational context
- OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, Slack, and PagerDuty integrations
- Where it doesn't
- Self-hosted deployment puts infrastructure work on the team
- Focused on Kubernetes rather than general-purpose observability
- Infrastructure costs remain the operator's responsibility
