Our verdict on Avenza Maps

Avenza Maps is a mobile mapping app for outdoor users and field teams who need map access where internet or cellular service is limited. On iOS and Android, users can browse and download maps from the Avenza Map Store, view their GPS position offline, record tracks, and add map annotations. Its emphasis is on working with downloaded and custom georeferenced maps, rather than serving as a general offline road-navigation app.

The free plan includes Map Store access, map viewing, activity and GPS-track recording, and plotting placemarks and photos. Plus adds additional geofence options, imports for up to 20 custom maps, and a satellite basemap layer. Pro allows unlimited custom map imports and adds professional and academic use, advanced mapping, and data collection. Plus and Pro trials vary by subscription and device platform; the vendor's support page describes trials up to 30 days. Custom map imports and offline regions from the OpenStreetMap basemap are paid-tier features, so users relying on their own maps should account for that before choosing a plan.

Navigation can target map features or coordinates, or follow a user-created route; the app also supports searching map features, coordinates, and online OpenStreetMap places. These tools are useful when a downloaded map is the reference for field work, but Avenza notes that its navigation does not account for terrain or blocking features. It therefore suits users who need GPS location, tracks, and annotations on custom maps, not drivers seeking conventional turn-by-turn guidance. The app integrates with Global Mapper, and support is available through documentation and tickets.
