Our verdict on Authme

Authme is an open-source authenticator for people who want desktop access to TOTP two-factor authentication codes. It supports Windows, Linux, macOS, and the web, with a focus on keeping authentication data available outside a mobile-only workflow. The application generates TOTP codes, imports TOTP QR codes, and accepts Google Authenticator data. Its GPL-3.0 licensing and offline operation, except for updates, make it a fit for users who prefer a locally focused tool.

Migration and portability are central strengths. Authme supports migration from 2FAS Authenticator and Aegis Authenticator, alongside Google Authenticator imports, giving users several established routes for bringing existing accounts into the application. Export and backup tools support moving or preserving authentication codes, while AES-256 encryption protected by a user password adds a defined protection layer for stored data. The option to hide the application from video capture and screenshots is also useful for private desktop workflows.

Authme is narrower than authenticator products built around mobile access, multiple code standards, or synchronized accounts. Its supported code type is TOTP, and the published feature set does not include HOTP or verified synchronization. The supported platform list covers desktop operating systems and the web, not mobile apps, so users who need phone-first access or a broader device ecosystem should choose an alternative. Authme fits users who prioritize open-source software, offline operation, desktop access, imports, and backups over cross-device synchronization.
