AuroraBoot review
An open-source stack for building images, provisioning nodes, and managing Kairos fleets.

AuroraBoot is Kairos's bootstrapper for building bootable ISO, UKI, raw-disk, and system-extension images, then provisioning machines through PXE, network boot, Redfish, or USB. It is aimed at infrastructure teams managing Kairos machines across labs, edge environments, and larger fleets. The product is available as a CLI binary and a containerized deployment, with web, Windows, macOS, Linux, API, and self-hosted platform options.
Its strongest differentiator is the range of provisioning paths in one tool. Cloud-config customization supports unattended installation, while Redfish enables BMC-driven deployment and PXE handles network boot workflows. USB installation-media customization adds a local deployment route. For ongoing operations, the self-hosted fleet-server mode provides a browser dashboard, node management, netboot services, and actions for upgrades, reboots, resets, and remote commands. Secure Boot key generation and storage extends the workflow beyond initial imaging.
AuroraBoot also gives platform teams several ways to integrate it into existing infrastructure. The REST API includes Swagger UI and a Go client, and the listed ecosystem includes Docker, Podman, PostgreSQL, and Redfish. That combination suits teams that want API-driven provisioning with a self-hosted control plane. It is less suitable for organizations seeking a vendor-managed service, broad non-Kairos machine management, or AI-assisted workflows. Choose AuroraBoot when open-source ownership, cross-platform access, image flexibility, and fleet lifecycle actions matter most; consider an alternative when managed operations or a wider hardware inventory focus is the priority.
