Our verdict on Atari800

Atari800 is a free, open-source emulator for Atari 8-bit computers and the Atari 5200 console. Its supported systems include the Atari 400, 800, 1200XL, 600XL, 800XL, 65XE, 130XE, 800XE, XE Game System and 5200 SuperSystem. Builds are available for Linux, Windows, macOS and Android, making it suitable for users who want one project covering Atari computer and console emulation across desktop and mobile platforms.

The main strength is breadth paired with low-level emulation detail. Atari800 provides cycle-exact emulation of the 6502, ANTIC, GTIA and POKEY components, while supporting disk, cartridge and cassette images. It can configure up to eight emulated disk drives and offers configurable memory expansions. Saved emulator state files, quick save/load state, screen snapshots and WAV audio output add practical options for preserving and reviewing sessions. Controller support covers joysticks, paddles, mice and other devices, with SDL2 configuration and per-button remapping for more control over input.

The trade-off is that setup includes platform and software dependencies rather than a fully self-contained experience. BIOS support is required, and the emulator’s required ROM files are not distributed with it because of licensing and copyright restrictions. That makes Atari800 a strong fit for technically comfortable users who already understand Atari software images, system ROMs and emulator configuration. Users seeking a simpler, more guided setup or built-in online play should consider an alternative focused on onboarding or netplay instead.
