Our verdict on Asobi

Asobi is an open-source multiplayer game backend for developers who need matchmaking, authoritative game sessions, and connected player services without adopting a closed platform. Its scope extends beyond queues: authentication, player sessions, leaderboards, economy, social features, storage, an operator console, and WebSocket state synchronization are included. Official SDKs cover Unreal Engine, Unity, Godot, Defold, TypeScript/JavaScript, Dart/Flutter, and Lua-based environments, while deployment can be managed through Asobi Cloud or handled with Docker and other container infrastructure.

Matchmaking is the clearest strength. Developers can configure periodic-tick matchmaking by game mode, ticket properties, queue order, skill, skill windows, latency, and region. The published capabilities include skill-based and first-come-first-matched strategies, server allocation, and custom Erlang strategies. That makes Asobi suitable for games that need explicit queue rules and server-authoritative ephemeral matches. Lua scripting with hot reload provides another path for game logic, while Erlang/OTP embedding supports teams already working in that ecosystem. Real-time state synchronization is handled through WebSockets.

The main trade-off is focus: party matching is not supported, so games that depend on premade groups should consider another matchmaking backend. Deployment is flexible, but teams must choose between an invite-only managed cloud offering and operating the service themselves. Self-hosting offers control over container infrastructure, while the broader backend surface may require more engineering ownership than a narrowly scoped queue service. Asobi is a strong fit for developers wanting open-source control, configurable matchmaking, and integrated multiplayer services; it is less suitable for teams seeking built-in party queues or a fully open managed-cloud onboarding path.
