Argus is an open-source network audit system for security investigations, network operations, performance analysis, traffic baselining, and forensic analysis. It captures packets from live interfaces or packet files, then generates bidirectional network-flow records. The system is suited to teams that need packet and flow visibility across Windows, macOS, and Linux, from individual hosts and mirrored interfaces to distributed environments with multiple observation points.

The open-source pricing model keeps the product outside a tiered commercial-plan structure. The published product details show no device-based plan limits, while the feature set covers real-time flow monitoring, packet capture, filtering, aggregation, bandwidth analytics, and traffic auditing. Flow data collection and distribution are handled with radium. Protocol support includes Argus, NetFlow, IPFIX, J-Flow, Q-Flow, and K-Flow, giving the product a broad basis for collecting and analyzing network activity without separating core capabilities into paid tiers.

Argus is particularly focused on packet and flow forensics rather than lightweight dashboard monitoring. Its support for application visibility, conversation analysis, bandwidth monitoring, protocol identification, payload analysis, and sessionization provides depth for investigations and network-usage analysis. Deployment is on premises, so organizations seeking a hosted service should choose an alternative. Argus is a strong fit for teams that want open-source control and detailed traffic records across major desktop and server platforms; it is less suitable for buyers looking for a managed monitoring experience or a simple, narrowly scoped interface.

Argus pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Correlates bidirectional flows and sessionizes packet data
    • Captures from live interfaces and packet files
    • Supports Windows, macOS, and Linux deployments
  • Where it doesn't
    • On-premises deployment does not provide hosted delivery
    • Its broad feature set may exceed simple monitoring needs
    • Requires separate flow collection and analysis components
