ArgoUML review
A broad free desktop UML 1.4 tool with code engineering and model interchange.

ArgoUML is an open-source desktop application for creating, editing, reviewing, and exchanging UML models. It suits developers, analysts, and technical teams that need free cross-platform modeling on Windows, macOS, or Linux through a compatible Java runtime. Its coverage includes class, statechart, activity, use case, collaboration, deployment, and sequence diagrams, along with UML profiles and standard UML metamodel support. The tool is designed for model-driven work rather than lightweight diagram sketching alone.
Its engineering features give it more depth than a diagram-only application. ArgoUML supports XMI model import, export, and interchange; OCL constraint modeling with syntax and type checking; forward engineering and source-code generation; and reverse engineering from Java source, class, and JAR files. Design critics, checklists, to-do lists, multiple explorer perspectives, and overlapping diagram views add review and organization features for larger modeling tasks. Diagram output can be exported to GIF, PNG, PostScript, EPS, PGML, and SVG.
The main trade-off is its legacy focus. The product centers on UML 1.4 and is distributed as desktop software rather than a hosted web application, so it fits teams that value a local Java-based workflow and established modeling capabilities over newer cloud collaboration patterns. It is also not positioned around AI-assisted modeling. Choose ArgoUML when free access, source-code engineering, OCL checking, XMI, and broad platform support matter most. Consider another tool when the priority is a newer UML focus, browser-based collaboration, or AI features.
