Argo CD review
Open-source GitOps automation for teams deploying and governing applications across Kubernetes clusters.

Argo CD is an open-source, Kubernetes-native continuous delivery tool for teams that manage application deployments through GitOps. It treats Git repositories as the source of truth, compares desired configuration with live Kubernetes state, and supports automated or manual synchronization. Teams can manage applications across multiple Kubernetes clusters through a web UI, CLI, or API, while configuration-management support covers Kustomize, Helm, Jsonnet, YAML/JSON manifests, and custom plugins.
The product's strongest fit is its GitOps control loop. Configuration drift detection and visualization help teams identify differences between repository state and running applications, while application health analysis provides status information during delivery. Deployment history and rollback to a previous version add a recovery path when a release needs to be reversed. Argo CD also includes application events and API audit trails, plus webhooks, RBAC, and integrations for OIDC, OAuth2, LDAP, and SAML 2.0. Repository connectivity includes GitHub, GitLab, and Bitbucket.
Argo CD is distributed as open-source software and can be self-hosted, making it a practical choice for teams that want Kubernetes deployment automation without a vendor-hosted subscription plan. Its scope is deliberately focused: the deployment targets are Kubernetes clusters, and rollout strategies such as canary can use hooks and related Argo tooling. Approval controls are documented for pruning or deletion, which matters for teams that need safeguards around destructive changes. Choose Argo CD when Kubernetes and GitOps are central to the delivery model; consider a broader deployment platform when the target environment extends beyond Kubernetes.
Argo CD pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Automates desired-state synchronization with drift detection and health analysis
- Supports multi-cluster deployments with Helm, Kustomize, Jsonnet, and plugins
- Includes RBAC, SSO, rollback, audit trails, UI, CLI, and API access
- Where it doesn't
- Targets Kubernetes clusters rather than broader deployment environments
- Self-hosted operation places platform management with the deploying team
- Approval controls are documented specifically for pruning or deletion
