Our verdict on Apple News
Apple News brings journalism together in a reading app where people can follow topics and publications, browse local news, and get editor-chosen stories alongside personalized recommendations. It is aimed at readers who want curated news on Apple devices, as well as publishers preparing and distributing articles through Apple's publishing tools. The service is available free, with Apple News+ as a paid subscription for readers seeking additional publications and formats.
The free Apple News plan includes top stories chosen by editors, personalized recommendations, local news, and Apple News Today. According to the published plan details, Apple News+ costs $12.99 per month and adds access to more than 500 publications, magazine issues that can be read online or offline, audio stories, and daily puzzles. That makes the paid tier more relevant to readers who want magazines and narrated stories alongside news; readers satisfied with general news may find the free service a better fit.
Platform coverage is limited to iOS and macOS, so readers looking beyond Apple devices should choose another service. Apple News also serves publishers: Apple News Format, News Publisher, and Apple News API delivery support article preparation and distribution, while Workbench provides advertising campaign and performance management. These publishing capabilities distinguish it from a reader-only app, but its focus is news content rather than email newsletters or subscriber management. Choose Apple News for curated reading within Apple's ecosystem; look elsewhere for broader device support or newsletter operations.
