Our verdict on Apastra
Apastra is an open-source, file-based PromptOps framework for developers and AI teams managing prompts as versioned engineering assets. Prompt specifications use stable IDs, variables, output contracts, and metadata, while datasets, evaluators, benchmark suites, assertions, and policies are stored in Git. The product is aimed at teams that want prompt changes reviewed, evaluated, pinned, promoted, and rolled back through development workflows rather than managed primarily in a hosted interface.
Its strongest area is the connection between prompt quality work and release control. Apastra supports deterministic, schema-based, and AI-judged evaluations, saved baselines, scorecards, regression reports, and policies. Prompts can be pinned to commits, tags, semantic versions, or digests, then promoted through delivery targets with promotion records and rollback by prior digest. Local execution works with IDE agents including Claude Code, Cursor, Amp, Codex, OpenCode, and Pi. GitHub Actions can add pull-request gating and immutable releases, while OpenAI-compatible and Anthropic-compatible clients support broader runtime integration.
The trade-off is its local-first operating model. Apastra does not present a hosted service or external runtime for execution, so it fits teams comfortable maintaining Git-based and self-hosted workflows. Observability is narrower: provider request logging is optional and limited to supported coding-agent and compatible adapters, while hosted access controls are not part of the documented model. Choose Apastra when reproducible prompt development, evaluation, and delivery controls matter more than a centralized managed workspace. Teams seeking hosted governance or broader built-in observability should consider an alternative with those capabilities as core features.
