Apache Velocity review
A free, open-source Java engine for logic-based server-side text rendering.

Apache Velocity is a Java-based template engine for teams that need to generate text from templates. Java code supplies objects in a context, and templates use the Velocity Template Language to reference them and control output. It can be embedded in a Java application or run as a standalone utility, rather than used as a hosted service. Its output range extends from dynamic web pages to source code, SQL, PostScript, and automatic emails, making it suitable for Java teams with varied rendering needs.
The core feature set covers common logic-based rendering tasks: templates can conditionally emit content with if/else directives, loop through collections with foreach, include files, parse other templates, and define reusable macros. Resource loaders can retrieve templates from files, the classpath, or a database, while event handlers allow custom actions such as transforming inserted references. This breadth is useful when one Java-based rendering approach needs to serve multiple text-generation tasks. The tradeoff is that these capabilities live within a self-hosted Java setup; teams seeking a hosted template service or a workflow outside Java should look elsewhere.
Velocity is free and open source under the Apache License, Version 2.0, so there are no paid tiers to compare. The project describes it as a library for Java applications, and support is community-based. One important consideration for web output is that automatic escaping is listed as false, so teams should account for escaping in their own rendering approach. Choose Velocity when Java integration, reusable template logic, and varied text output matter; consider an alternative if automatic escaping is required or community support does not fit your needs.
