Apache Superset review
A capable self-hosted BI choice for teams that work primarily with SQL.

Apache Superset is an open-source business intelligence and data exploration platform for analysts, engineers, and data teams. It connects to SQL-based databases and cloud data engines, combining a SQL editor with no-code visualization, interactive dashboards, and more than 40 pre-installed visualization types. Teams can also configure alerts, scheduled reports, row-level security, embedded dashboards, REST APIs, and extensions. Its self-hosted deployment model suits organizations that want to operate BI in their own environments under the Apache License 2.0.
Superset fits teams whose data estate is centered on SQL-based databases and cloud data engines. Email and Slack delivery support alerts and scheduled reports, while webhooks add another notification path. Embedded dashboards can be delivered through an SDK or direct links, and the REST API supports integration with surrounding systems. These capabilities give technical teams room to connect Superset to internal applications and workflows, although the product's ecosystem is oriented around SQL sources rather than a broad range of business applications.
The main trade-off is operational responsibility. Organizations install and operate Superset themselves, so it is better suited to teams with the technical capacity to manage a self-hosted BI environment than to buyers seeking a vendor-hosted service. The published feature set covers access controls, row-level security, reporting, embedding, and APIs, but its SQL focus can limit convenience and breadth compared with commercial suites. Choose Superset when open-source deployment, SQL analysis, and control over the operating environment matter most; consider an alternative when hosted convenience or wider source coverage is the priority.
Apache Superset pros and cons

- Free open-source deployment with dashboards, SQL analysis, and alerts
- 40+ pre-installed visualizations plus no-code chart building
- Row-level security, embedding, APIs, and scheduled reports
- Where it doesn't
- Self-hosted deployment requires organizations to operate their own environment
- SQL-centered connectivity narrows its fit for broader data sources
- Less convenient than commercial suites for teams seeking hosted BI
