Apache SkyWalking is an open-source application performance monitoring and observability platform for distributed, microservices, cloud-native, and container-based applications. It is designed for teams that want to run observability infrastructure themselves across web, Windows, macOS, Linux, API, and self-hosted environments. Its scope covers distributed and transaction tracing, dependency mapping, real-user monitoring, log correlation, metrics, profiling, alarms, and Kubernetes observability. The platform includes an OAP backend and web interfaces, with deployment options including Docker and Kubernetes.
Its main strength is coverage across the observability lifecycle. Teams can inspect span-level trace waterfalls, service, instance, and endpoint dependencies, application and infrastructure metrics, correlated logs, browser performance, and CPU, asynchronous, network, and runtime profiles. Kubernetes and service-mesh support extends that view into cloud-native infrastructure. Telemetry can enter through OpenTelemetry, Telegraf, Zabbix, Prometheus, and Zipkin, while integrations include Istio, Envoy, Grafana, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Elasticsearch, MongoDB, BanyanDB, ActiveMQ, and RabbitMQ.
Apache SkyWalking follows an open-source model rather than a conventional tiered hosted plan. That makes it a fit for organizations that prefer control over deployment and observability data, but self-hosting also makes platform ownership part of the operating model. Role-based access control and alarm rules support shared operational use, while browser monitoring adds page views, frontend errors, page-load timing, and Core Web Vitals. Choose SkyWalking when deep, wide observability and ecosystem flexibility matter more than managed-service convenience; teams seeking a narrowly focused or hosted APM experience should consider alternatives.
Apache SkyWalking pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Combines tracing, topology maps, metrics, logs, profiling, and alerts
- Supports Kubernetes, service meshes, browser monitoring, and eBPF profiling
- Ingests telemetry through OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, Zipkin, and more
- Where it doesn't
- Self-hosting requires teams to manage deployment and operations
- Its wide feature set may exceed the needs of smaller applications
- It is not presented as a conventional hosted SaaS product
