Apache Kudu review
A self-hosted Kudu engine for fast OLAP scans, inserts, updates, and horizontal scaling.

Apache Kudu is an open-source distributed columnar storage engine for online analytical processing on rapidly changing data. It is designed for self-managed cluster deployments supporting reporting, time-series analytics, and real-time decision-support applications. Kudu combines fast inserts, updates, and deletes with columnar scans, and runs on commodity hardware while scaling horizontally. Its deployment model suits teams that want control over their database infrastructure rather than a vendor-operated hosted service.
Kudu fits environments built around the Apache and data-processing ecosystems. It integrates with Apache Impala, Apache NiFi, Apache Spark SQL, Presto, Apache Drill, Apache Hive, Apache Spark, Apache Beam, Apache Flink, Apache Kafka, StreamSets Data Collector, Cloudera Manager, and Docker. The platform also provides hash and range partitioning, replicated masters and tablet servers, full and incremental backup and restore, and authenticated and encrypted RPC communication. Parquet is the supported format listed for the product.
The main trade-off is operational ownership: Kudu is self-hosted, so deployment and cluster management remain with the adopting team. Its transaction support is defined for multi-row transactions involving supported insert operations, rather than presenting a general transaction model for every write type. Choose Kudu when distributed columnar storage, fast changes to analytical data, Hadoop-oriented integrations, and infrastructure control are priorities. Choose another database when managed hosting or a broader transaction scope is essential.
Apache Kudu pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Fast inserts, updates, deletes, and columnar OLAP scans
- Horizontal scaling with Raft-based replication and high availability
- Broad integration with SQL and data-processing frameworks
- Where it doesn't
- Requires self-managed cluster deployment
- No vendor-operated hosted database service
- Multi-row transactions apply to supported insert operations
