Apache FreeMarker review
An open-source Java library for producing varied text formats from FTL templates.

Apache FreeMarker is an open-source Java library that turns FreeMarker Template Language (FTL) templates and application data models into text output. It fits teams building Java applications that need to generate HTML pages, emails, configuration files, source code, or other text, both inside and outside web environments. Applications prepare the data model, while FreeMarker handles template processing through a logic-based syntax.
Its breadth is a central strength. Templates support conditional blocks, iteration, assignments, expressions, macros, and functions, allowing one engine to cover varied generation tasks. Configurable template loaders can retrieve templates from different resource locations, and templates obtained through Configuration methods can have their parsed forms cached. Locale-sensitive number and date/time formatting support internationalized output, while XML documents can be used in the data model. Output-format-based automatic escaping is available for supported markup formats when configured, making configuration an important part of rendering behavior.
FreeMarker is integrated as a library rather than a hosted service, so adoption means incorporating it into a Java application and managing deployment yourself. It has no required dependencies beyond Java itself, and support is centered on community resources and documentation. Security requires particular attention: uploaded templates should be treated as code, and the project describes security configuration rather than a turnkey sandbox. Choose FreeMarker when a Java system needs flexible, multi-format text generation with loaders, caching, and formatting controls. Consider another approach when you need a hosted editor, non-Java runtime, or isolation for untrusted template authors.
