Apache Doris review
A broad, SQL-compatible OLAP database for teams prepared to manage self-hosting.

Apache Doris is an open-source, MPP-based analytical database for teams building real-time analytics, data warehouses, lakehouse queries, observability workloads, and AI applications. It uses standard SQL through MySQL protocol compatibility and supports internal BI, dashboards, ad hoc analysis, customer-facing analytics, and data products. Its fit is strongest for organizations that want one analytical engine spanning streaming data, batch sources, external catalogs, and embedded experiences rather than a narrowly focused reporting database.
Its ecosystem coverage is a major part of the proposition. Doris connects with Apache Kafka and Apache Flink for streaming workflows, MySQL and PostgreSQL for database sources, and S3, Hive, and Iceberg for lakehouse data. BI and client integrations include Apache Superset, Metabase, Power BI, Tableau, and DBeaver. Federated queries reduce the need to move every dataset into one store, while columnar storage, multiple index types, and materialized views support analytical workloads. Full-text and vector search extend the platform beyond conventional OLAP, and row-level policies plus column permissions provide controls for shared data products.
The main tradeoff is deployment ownership: Doris is self-hosted, so the team must handle the surrounding operational work rather than selecting a vendor-managed product tier. That model suits engineering-led teams with control, infrastructure, and database administration requirements, but it is less suitable for buyers seeking a turnkey cloud service or a simple reporting tool. Choose Apache Doris when open-source control, real-time ingestion, federated lakehouse access, and embedded analytics matter together. Consider a more focused or managed alternative when minimizing deployment responsibility is the priority.
Apache Doris pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Real-time streaming and CDC ingestion with MPP query execution
- Federated queries across databases, catalogs, and lakehouse sources
- Materialized views, search, row-level policies, and embedded analytics
- Where it doesn't
- Self-hosted deployment places operational responsibility on the team
- Broad capabilities may require more architecture than focused BI tools
- No product pricing tiers are presented for the open-source deployment
