Anti-Twin is a free desktop utility for finding duplicate and similar files across local drives, USB flash disks, memory cards, and shared network folders. It suits solo users and small or mid-market teams cleaning personal storage or redundant files in company network repositories. The software runs on Windows, while Linux and macOS access is described through Wine. Its private-use freeware model also makes it relevant for users who want duplicate-file matching without a paid plan.

Its strongest area is comparison depth. Anti-Twin can match files byte by byte, compare binary similarity, assess configurable filename similarity, and compare images by their pixels. Users can add a second folder or path for comparison, then review result groups and select files automatically or by folders and properties. This combination gives it broader matching coverage than a tool limited to exact filenames or identical file content, particularly when image duplicates or differently named files are part of the cleanup task.

The cleanup workflow includes moving selected files, permanently deleting them, or sending them to the Recycle Bin, with results exportable in Excel/OpenOffice-compatible formats. Those options fit practical desktop and network-repository housekeeping, but the product's platform story is less direct outside Windows: Linux and macOS rely on Wine. The official site also says Anti-Twin was maintained until 2012, although its download page states that it runs on current Windows versions. Choose Anti-Twin for free image, binary, filename, removable-media, and network matching; choose another option if native Linux or macOS support, newer maintenance, or deeper preview and exclusion controls are priorities.

Anti-Twin pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Compares files by bytes, binary similarity, names, and image pixels
    • Scans local, removable, memory-card, and shared network locations
    • Offers automatic selection, Recycle Bin support, and spreadsheet-compatible exports
  • Where it doesn't
    • Linux and macOS use depends on Wine rather than native builds
    • The official site says maintenance ended in 2012
    • Review and exclusion coverage is limited
