Our verdict on Analytica
Analytica is a visual decision-modeling environment from Lumina Decision Systems for analysts who need to build quantitative models and communicate their results. Its influence diagrams organize model relationships, while Monte Carlo simulation represents uncertainty and sensitivity and importance analysis help examine which inputs matter. The product spans desktop, cloud, and API use, with capabilities for financial functions, dynamic system simulation, multidimensional arrays, and optimization. It suits modelers working across domains; teams seeking a conventional reporting tool rather than model-building and analysis may prefer a narrower alternative.
The desktop editions differ by capability and annual price. Professional starts at $1,000 per year and includes full model creation functions. Developer starts at $2,000 per year, adding ODBC database access, huge arrays, and model protection and profiling. Optimizer starts at $4,000 per year and adds a solver for linear, mixed-integer, and nonlinear optimization. The Free Edition has no time limit, but is capped at 101 user-defined objects and requires Windows desktop software. These tiers make the paid choice depend on whether database access, model controls, or optimization is central to the work.
For browser-based collaboration, ACP Basic Group costs $2,000 per year for cloud model sharing with 5 users and 500 model runs per month; ACP Premium Group costs $5,000 per year for 12 users, 1,200 runs per month, and database access. Separate products cover server execution and API access through ADE, dedicated-server ACP installation, and cost-effectiveness analysis through ACE. Python, ODBC, Excel, and CSV connections broaden data options. Choose Analytica when uncertainty analysis, optimization, or deployment flexibility matters; look elsewhere if a free desktop workflow must support more than the Free Edition's object limit.
