Anaconda Notebooks review
A capable cloud notebook environment, but not a fit for artifact repository needs.

Anaconda Notebooks is a web-based JupyterLab environment for writing, editing, and running Python code without local installation. It is aimed at learners, individual developers, data scientists, and teams working on data science, machine learning, and AI projects. The service includes preconfigured environments, Conda configuration and package management, notebook sharing through links and badges, Panel app deployment, CSV data connectors, and an AI assistant for Python and table analysis.
Pricing follows a freemium model. The Free plan costs $0 per month and includes Anaconda Core package management, notebooks with 5GB of cloud storage, thousands of data-science, machine-learning, and AI packages, Anaconda Assistant code help, and introductory courses. Starter costs $15 per user per month when billed monthly and adds 10GB of storage per user, a professional development environment, on-demand training courses, and team workspace controls. Business costs $50 per user per month and adds automated vulnerability scanning, audit trails, project governance, centralized access management, SSO, threat intelligence, and curated security data. Custom adds self-hosting, AI orchestration with built-in observability, advanced multi-team governance, custom integrations, and SLAs.
Its strongest fit is browser-based Python development rather than artifact repository management. Panel, Anaconda Cloud, and Excel integrations support notebook-centered workflows, while web access avoids a local installation. However, teams evaluating package hosting, proxying, or artifact lifecycle controls should choose a dedicated artifact repository product instead. Anaconda Notebooks makes sense for learning, experimentation, analysis, and collaborative AI work; it should not be selected when the primary requirement is managing and distributing software artifacts.
Anaconda Notebooks pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Browser-based JupyterLab with preconfigured data-science environments
- Conda package management and thousands of data-science packages
- Notebook sharing, Panel deployment, and an AI assistant
- Where it doesn't
- Not designed for artifact package hosting or proxying
- No artifact lifecycle controls for repository workflows
- Artifact repository teams may need a different product category
