Our verdict on Amiga 500 ESP32

Amiga 500 ESP32 is an open-source emulator for the Amiga 500 with OCS chipset and 1 MB classic expanded configuration. It is aimed at ESP32-S3 mini-arcade builds, while a parallel Linux/WSL PC build supports development and regression testing. The project covers the Motorola 68000 CPU through the Musashi core, OCS graphics components, Paula audio, CIA chips, AmigaDOS floppy access, and cabinet-oriented controls. Its focus is clear: recreating one classic Amiga configuration on compact ESP32-S3 hardware rather than serving as a broad multi-model emulator.

The emulation feature set is detailed for that target. OCS support includes the copper, blitter, DMA, sprites, and scrolling, while Paula provides four-channel audio DMA with I2S output. Dual CIA 8520 emulation covers timers, TOD, interrupts, and floppy control. AmigaDOS MFM floppy-track emulation works with ADF disk images, which can be embedded using zlib compression. On Linux/WSL, the PC build adds PPM and BMP rendering, WAV audio output, and regression tests, giving the project a practical development path alongside its hardware target.

The main trade-off is scope and setup. Users must provide legally obtained Kickstart 1.3 ROMs and ADF disk images; the project does not include copyrighted ROMs, Workbench, or games. AGA and fast-RAM autoconfiguration are unsupported, so this is better suited to users specifically seeking an Amiga 500 OCS implementation than to users who need wider Amiga compatibility. Choose it for an MIT-licensed codebase, ESP32-S3 cabinet input mapping, and a focused classic configuration. Choose an alternative when broader Amiga model coverage or bundled software is a priority.
