Our verdict on Amidst

Amidst, short for Advanced Minecraft Interface and Data/Structure Tracking, is one of the oldest seed viewers still available, and its biome colours live on in several newer tools that credit it. It renders an overview of a Java Edition world from a seed and version without creating the world, can open a save game instead, and exports the map as an image. Layers show biome information, slime chunks, End islands, the world spawn and structures including strongholds, villages, witch huts, pillager outposts, temples, igloos, mineshafts, monuments, ocean ruins, shipwrecks, buried treasure, Nether fortresses and End cities.

It is a free desktop program under the GPLv3, distributed through GitHub releases as a Windows executable and a Java archive, with a wiki and an FAQ, and it checks for updates on every start. Its network use is spelled out: it talks to Mojang's services for version and player information and no longer includes the analytics tracking of older versions. Version 4.7 added Minecraft 1.17 support alongside generation for very old beta worlds from before beta 1.8, which makes it one of the few tools that can map a world from the game's earliest era.

That release came out in June 2021 and there has been none since, so the 1.18 terrain overhaul and every version after it are out of reach, and the project page carries a notice that it is searching for a new maintainer. It cannot show changes made to a world after generation, nor individual blocks such as diamond ore. Players on current versions should pick one of the maps ranked above. For a server or single-player world still running on 1.17 or earlier, though, it remains a dependable and well-documented viewer.
