AMD OCAT (Open Capture and Analysis Tool) review
A free, focused frame-time analyzer for Direct3D and Vulkan gameplay captures.

AMD OCAT (Open Capture and Analysis Tool) is a free, open-source Windows desktop utility for monitoring and analyzing real-time game performance. It targets players, reviewers, developers and graphics enthusiasts who need gameplay-focused frame-time data rather than a broad synthetic benchmark package. OCAT supports Direct3D 11, Direct3D 12 and Vulkan, and its hotkey-triggered captures can be reviewed after a session.
The published plan is free, with no paid tiers described. Its core workflow combines an in-game FPS overlay with capture and analysis tools. OCAT visualizes frame time and reprojection time, then reports average FPS, average frame time, missed frames and 99th-percentile results. Captures are saved as CSV files with performance summary output, and multiple files can be compared. Configurable overlay injection and a process denylist provide control over where the overlay appears and which processes it avoids. These features make OCAT a practical fit for repeatable gameplay analysis and frame-pacing investigation.
OCAT is narrower than a full synthetic suite: the published specifications mark in-game benchmarking, automated runs and standardized 3D tests as false. It also runs on Windows desktop rather than across multiple operating systems. Support is provided through documentation and community channels. AMD lists version 1.6.3 from September 2023. Choose OCAT when free, open-source capture with detailed frame-time statistics, CSV export and cross-file comparison is the priority. Choose a broader benchmark suite instead when automated scenarios, standardized tests or cross-platform deployment are central requirements.
