Ambassador Edge Stack is a self-hosted, Kubernetes-native API gateway for developers and platform teams managing service traffic at the edge. It uses Kubernetes Custom Resource Definitions to configure gateway behavior, supports HTTP and HTTPS listeners, and routes Kubernetes services by hostname and URL path. Its ingress controller capabilities make it a fit for teams that want gateway configuration to align with Kubernetes resources and operational workflows.

Traffic management is the product’s central strength. Rate limiting policies, automatic retries, timeouts, and circuit breakers give platform teams controls for managing service access and failure behavior. Protocol support covers HTTP, HTTPS, gRPC, gRPC-Web, and HTTP/3, extending the gateway beyond basic web routing. Teams selecting Edge Stack should be comfortable managing these controls as part of a Kubernetes-based platform rather than looking for a standalone hosted gateway.

Deployment uses manifests or Helm in a Kubernetes environment, and a license is obtained through Gravitee. The published product details identify contact-sales pricing rather than a fixed public plan structure. Ambassador Labs joined Gravitee in 2025, with the product continuing under the Edge Stack name, and Gravitee states that Ambassador products continue to receive support. Choose Ambassador Edge Stack when Kubernetes ingress, protocol coverage, and traffic controls are priorities; consider another option if you want a managed service or a gateway that does not require Kubernetes operations.
