Amazon SageMaker Feature Store is a fully managed service for storing, sharing, managing, and serving machine learning features. It is designed for teams that need both low-latency online lookups for real-time inference and offline storage for historical data, training, and batch inference. Online and offline stores synchronize, while batch and streaming ingestion support different feature data workflows. Point-in-time queries help retrieve historical feature values and reduce feature leakage during model training.

Pricing is usage-based. The Free Tier includes 10 million write units, 10 million read units, and 25 GB of standard online-store storage per month. The On-demand plan charges for feature-group writes, reads, and data storage, with on-demand or provisioned throughput available for the standard online store. The published pricing structure varies with storage type, throughput mode, AWS Region, and usage volume, so the service is better suited to teams that can forecast and manage consumption than to buyers seeking a fixed monthly price.

Its strongest fit is the AWS-centered ML environment. Integrations include Amazon S3, Amazon Redshift, AWS Lake Formation, Snowflake, Databricks Delta Lake, Amazon SageMaker Studio, AWS Glue Data Catalog, Amazon Athena, Amazon SageMaker Data Wrangler, and Apache Spark. Feature Processor supports transformation and ingestion pipelines, while cataloging, search, tagging, reuse, lineage tracking, SQL querying, encryption, IAM access control, and cross-account access cover important operational needs. Choose it when online and offline serving, historical queries, and AWS integration matter; consider another option if you need an open-source or non-cloud deployment, or feature monitoring as a stated capability.

Amazon SageMaker Feature Store pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Online and offline stores support serving, training, and batch inference.
    • Point-in-time queries help retrieve historical values for model training.
    • Cataloging, lineage, SQL access, and AWS integrations support feature reuse.
  • Where it doesn't
    • Usage-based costs vary by storage, throughput, Region, and volume.
    • Cloud deployment and AWS integrations may not fit non-AWS teams.
    • Feature monitoring is not among the described capabilities.
