Amazon SageMaker Data Wrangler is a cloud data-preparation capability for machine-learning teams working with tabular, time-series, text, and image data. Its visual and natural-language interfaces support importing, profiling, cleaning, transforming, and analyzing datasets. Teams can combine sources, define visual workflows, inspect data quality, estimate model performance, and prepare features without relying solely on code.

The standout strength is the combination of breadth and workflow continuity. Data Wrangler includes more than 300 preconfigured transformations, visualizations such as histograms and scatter plots, data-quality and insights reports, and Quick Model analysis with feature importance and a confusion matrix. Custom transformations can use Python, PySpark, SQL, or Pandas. Scheduled processing jobs extend preparation beyond one-time exploration, while flows can be exported to SageMaker Pipelines, Feature Store, notebooks, or Python scripts. This makes it a fit for teams that want visual exploration connected to repeatable machine-learning workflows.

Pricing is usage-based rather than organized around fixed per-user plans. The Pay-as-you-go plan charges for compute, storage, and data processing. AWS lists a SageMaker AI Free Tier allocation of 25 Data Wrangler hours on an ml.m5.4xlarge instance during the first two months, but there is no permanent free plan. Integrations include Amazon S3, Athena, Redshift, EMR, Snowflake, Databricks, Salesforce Data Cloud, Lake Formation, and SageMaker services. Choose Data Wrangler when AWS integration, scheduled preparation, and export into SageMaker tooling are priorities. Teams seeking a self-hosted product, fixed subscription pricing, or a less AWS-centered ecosystem should consider another option.

    • Exports to SageMaker Pipelines, Feature Store, notebooks, and scripts
  • Where it doesn't
    • Usage-based pricing makes costs dependent on compute and processing
    • Cloud-only deployment limits offline and self-hosted workflows
    • Its broadest ecosystem fit is within AWS and connected services
