Amazon SageMaker Autopilot is an AutoML capability within Amazon SageMaker AI for data scientists, developers, analysts, and organizations building machine-learning models on AWS. It automates data analysis, preprocessing, missing-value handling, feature selection, feature engineering, algorithm and model selection, training, tuning, evaluation, and deployment. The workflow covers tabular regression and classification, text and image classification, time-series forecasting, and selected large-language-model fine-tuning workflows. Users can work through SageMaker Studio interfaces or the AutoML API and SDKs.

Pricing is usage-based rather than a fixed Autopilot subscription. The On-demand plan charges only for resources used, with no minimum fees or upfront commitments. Savings Plans provide flexible usage-based pricing but require a commitment to consistent usage. The AWS Free Tier shown for SageMaker AI applies for the first two months, so it is not a perpetual free plan. Buyers should therefore match their expected training, tuning, evaluation, and deployment activity to the available commitment model before choosing between flexible On-demand use and Savings Plans.

Autopilot’s strongest differentiator is the breadth of its managed workflow: automated transformations, model ranking, leaderboard comparison, feature-importance and SHAP-based explainability reports, generated notebooks, and automatic API-endpoint deployment are part of the documented capability set. Its fit is narrower when a team needs tooling outside the AWS environment or a broader integration ecosystem. The legacy Studio Classic interface is being migrated to SageMaker Canvas, while API and SDK workflows remain documented. Choose Autopilot for AWS-centered teams that want managed model development; consider an alternative for vendor-neutral workflows or a perpetual free plan.
