Amazon Keyspaces review
A managed CQL-compatible database for serverless Cassandra workloads on AWS.
Reviewed by iTechGuides Editors · Editorial team · Updated Oct 2026
Amazon Keyspaces is a fully managed, serverless wide-column database service for teams running Apache Cassandra-compatible workloads in the AWS Cloud. Its Cassandra Query Language (CQL) compatibility supports existing Cassandra drivers and application code, while serverless operation removes the need to provision or maintain database servers. The service fits applications that need low-latency, high-throughput access with horizontal scaling, tunable consistency controls, transactions, encryption, and multi-Region deployment. It is less suitable for teams looking for a general-purpose database outside the AWS environment or workloads that do not align with a wide-column data model.
Pricing is usage-based and varies by AWS Region. On-demand capacity charges for reads and writes actually performed, with capacity adjusting to application traffic. Provisioned capacity lets teams specify read and write capacity in advance, with automatic scaling available. The published plans also include an AWS Free Tier with 30 million on-demand write request units monthly, 30 million on-demand read request units monthly, and 1 GB of storage. Database Savings Plans offer a 1-year usage commitment and up to 18% savings stated by AWS. These options give teams a choice between traffic-responsive billing, planned capacity, and committed usage.
Its strongest fit is an AWS-centered architecture that benefits from native service connections. Amazon Keyspaces integrates with CloudWatch for performance monitoring, OpenSearch Service, the Kinesis Client Library, IAM, KMS, Amazon VPC, and AWS PrivateLink. Operational features include active-active multi-Region replication, point-in-time recovery with a 35-day restoration window, lightweight transactions with conditional writes, encryption at rest and in transit, and Keyspaces Streams change data capture. Choose it when managed Cassandra compatibility and AWS integration matter more than operating database servers directly; choose an alternative when the workload requires a different database model or a deployment approach beyond AWS.
