Amazon Deequ review
A Spark-based library for large-scale data-quality checks and metric monitoring.

Amazon Deequ is an open-source Scala library for defining data-quality tests and constraints on large datasets in Apache Spark. It is intended for teams working with Spark DataFrames, including tabular data from files, database tables, logs, and JSON. Its scope covers both data-quality checks and schema migration tests, with self-hosted test execution and support for Scala, Java, DQDL, and SQL.
Its strongest feature is the breadth of quality analysis available inside a Spark-oriented workflow. Deequ supports completeness, uniqueness, size, value, statistical, schema, freshness, and custom SQL checks. It also provides data profiling, automatic constraint suggestions, anomaly detection on quality metrics, persisted metrics that can be queried, incremental metrics computation, and row-level pass and fail results. These capabilities give data teams several ways to define rules, inspect quality trends, and isolate affected records.
The trade-off is its deployment model. Deequ is distributed as a library for user-managed Apache Spark environments rather than a hosted application, so it suits teams that already organize data processing around Spark and can manage execution themselves. Its database-related scope centers on tabular data represented as Spark DataFrames, while the published positioning does not define named database engines or a separate integrations ecosystem. Choose Amazon Deequ when large-scale Spark processing, programmable checks, and detailed quality metrics are priorities. Choose another database testing tool when you need a hosted interface, database-specific workflows, or broader platform coverage.
Amazon Deequ pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Supports constraints, profiling, anomaly detection, and row-level results
- Adds DQDL, SQL checks, schema matching, and automatic constraint suggestions
- Persists metrics and supports incremental computation for large datasets
- Where it doesn't
- Requires a user-managed Apache Spark environment
- Uses Scala, Java, DQDL, and SQL rather than a visual test interface
- Database engine support and integrations are not defined
