Amazon CodeGuru Profiler is a cloud service that collects runtime performance data from live applications and presents it in a centralized dashboard. It is designed for development teams investigating CPU utilization, latency, heap usage, expensive code paths, and broader application performance issues. Profiling uses sampling and supports Java and other JVM languages, plus Python 3.6 or later. Applications can run on AWS Lambda, EC2, containers, on-premises servers, or other platforms, while the service is delivered through the web.

Pricing is usage-based and billed monthly by sampling hour. The Free Tier provides no-cost access for 90 days, rather than a permanent free plan. For EC2, ECS, EKS, and Fargate, the Standard plan costs $0.005 per sampling hour and includes the first 36,000 sampling hours per profiling group per month, with no additional charge beyond that threshold. The Standard AWS Lambda plan also costs $0.005 per sampling hour, with the first 500 sampling hours per payer account free, followed by the same rate and no additional charge beyond 36,000 sampling hours per profiling group per month.

Its main strength is the depth of its production analysis: CPU and latency sampling, CPU troubleshooting, flame graphs, JVM heap summary visualization, colored thread-state views, anomaly and recommendation reports, and profiling groups for aggregating application data. These capabilities fit teams that need ongoing visibility into production performance across AWS compute services. Teams working primarily with unsupported languages or seeking a profiler centered on broader non-AWS ecosystem coverage may prefer another tool. CodeGuru Profiler is a strong fit when AWS deployment and continuous sampling are central requirements, especially during CPU and latency investigations.

Amazon CodeGuru Profiler pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Continuous CPU and latency sampling in production
    • Flame graphs, heap summaries, and thread-state visualization
    • Integrates with Lambda, EC2, ECS, EKS, and Fargate
  • Where it doesn't
    • Supported languages are limited to JVM languages and Python 3.6 or later
    • Usage-based pricing requires monitoring sampling-hour consumption
    • The strongest platform coverage centers on AWS services
