Our verdict on Amazon Bedrock Guardrails

Amazon Bedrock Guardrails provides configurable safeguards for generative AI applications. It evaluates user inputs and model responses through content filters, denied topics, word filters, sensitive-information filters, contextual grounding checks, and automated reasoning checks. The service can block harmful text and image content, mask personally identifiable information, detect prompt injection and jailbreak attempts, identify AWS access and secret keys, and enforce safeguards across accounts. It suits teams building AI applications that need controls for both prompts and model outputs, particularly in an AWS-centered environment.

Pricing is usage-based rather than a monthly subscription. Text content filters cost $0.15 per 1,000 text units, with Standard and Classic tiers, while image content filters cost $0.00075 per image processed. Denied topics cost $0.15 per 1,000 text units, also with Standard and Classic tiers. Sensitive information filters cost $0.10 per 1,000 text units; regular-expression sensitive-information filters and word filters are free. Contextual grounding checks cost $0.10 per 1,000 text units. InvokeGuardrailChecks content filters cost $0.07 per 1,000 text units for text content only. This structure gives teams control over which checks they apply, but the total cost depends on the mix and volume of evaluations.

Its ecosystem covers Amazon Bedrock Agents, Knowledge Bases, Flows, Strands Agents, and Amazon Bedrock AgentCore, along with OpenAI and Google Gemini models. The ApplyGuardrail API can evaluate content without invoking a model, while InvokeGuardrailChecks provides a separate content-filtering path. Teams that need prompt protection, PII handling, secrets detection, grounding, reasoning checks, and cross-account enforcement in one cloud deployment should consider it. Organizations seeking a free plan or a less AWS-centered setup may prefer another option.
