Alternative Mod Launcher is a Windows desktop replacement for the default launchers used by XCOM 2 and XCOM Chimera Squad. It is aimed at players who manage Steam Workshop mods and want more control over profiles, categories, configuration files, and installed-mod organization. The launcher is free and open source, with Steam Workshop and Steam as its listed integrations. Its workflow stays focused on these supported XCOM games rather than serving as a general-purpose mod manager.

Steam Workshop integration is the central strength. The launcher can show mod details, tags, changelogs, dependencies, and subscription controls, while search and filtering help locate installed mods. Profiles and categories provide separate ways to organize mod collections, and editable notes add context to individual entries. Automatic mod updates run on startup and are enabled by default, giving the launcher a defined update workflow for Workshop content.

Configuration tools make the launcher more than a list manager. It includes an in-launcher mod configuration editor, saves configuration to disk and settings files, and performs basic checks for duplicate IDs, class conflicts, and screenlistener conflicts. Players who want a focused Windows tool for Steam Workshop configuration should pick it. Players on other platforms, or those looking for a broader mod-management scope beyond the supported XCOM titles and Workshop workflow, should not choose it.

Alternative Mod Launcher pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Steam Workshop details include tags, changelogs, and dependencies
    • Profiles, categories, notes, and search organize installed mods
    • Basic conflict checks and automatic startup updates are built in
  • Where it doesn't
    • Windows-only support limits platform coverage
    • Requires Steam, a supported XCOM game, and .NET Framework 4.7.2+
    • Compatibility checks cover basic conflicts rather than broader mod issues
