Our verdict on AllTrails
AllTrails is a trail discovery and navigation service for hikers and other outdoor users. It brings together trail maps, route details, community reviews, and activity planning across web, iOS, and Android. Search by city, park, or trail name, then build or edit a custom route on the website or record an activity with live tracking. Its global map coverage and offline trail and park downloads make it especially relevant to hikers planning routes before heading outdoors.
Offline use is a central paid-tier distinction. The free Base tier is available, and a 7-day free trial is offered. The published Plus highlights include offline map downloads, trail conditions, wrong-turn alerts, and Garmin and COROS connectivity. Downloaded maps can be used with device GPS and Navigate while offline; members can also download whole parks and their trail information. The starting price shown is 35.99. Wrong-turn alerts are paid, so hikers who want that guidance should account for the Plus plan rather than assume it comes with free access.
AllTrails also combines route creation with community trail reviews, offering a broader planning and discovery experience than a map download alone. Garmin and COROS connectivity gives it a fit for users with those devices, while web and mobile access support planning away from the trail and navigation on it. Choose AllTrails if trail discovery, custom routes, and downloading trails or parks for offline GPS use are the priorities. Hikers who need offline place search should compare alternatives, since this feature is not established here; those seeking wrong-turn alerts should expect to pay.
