Alibaba Cloud MaxCompute is a fully managed, serverless cloud data warehouse for enterprise-scale warehousing, analytics, business intelligence, near-real-time processing, data lake analysis, and machine learning. It is aimed at teams that need independently scalable storage and compute, support for several processing engines, and access to data across Alibaba Cloud services and external systems. MaxCompute is available through web and API interfaces, with SQL analytics, query acceleration, external tables, streaming ingestion, and PAI integration for model training.

Pricing is resource-based rather than organized around a conventional fixed SaaS plan. Standard computing resources cost $22 per CU per month and provide dedicated subscription compute resources. Multi-zone HA computing resources cost $28.6 per CU per month and provide subscription compute resources across multiple availability zones. Elastically reserved CUs cost $0.0488 per CU per hour with scheduled scaling and pay-as-you-go billing, while Auto-elastic CUs cost $0.0558 per CU per hour with automatic scaling and charges based on resources consumed. Storage and downloads are billed separately, so buyers should account for more than compute when planning costs.

Its main strength is breadth across analytics workloads and data environments. MaxCompute can query OSS and Hadoop data through lakehouse queries and external tables, ingest streaming data through Tunnel SDK, Flink, DataHub, and Kafka synchronization, and connect with DataWorks, Hologres, Quick BI, DLF, JDBC, Spark, MapReduce, and Graph. Resource observation, job operations, and quota management add operational controls. Choose MaxCompute when serverless batch analytics, mixed engines, and Alibaba Cloud integration are priorities. Teams seeking a simpler fixed-price warehouse, or a production-ready lakehouse feature rather than a public-preview offering, should consider an alternative.

Alibaba Cloud MaxCompute pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Separates storage and compute for independent scaling
    • Supports SQL, Spark, MapReduce, Graph, and MaxFrame
    • Queries OSS and Hadoop data without migration
  • Where it doesn't
    • Storage and downloads are billed separately
    • Lakehouse solution is listed as public preview
    • Resource-based pricing requires compute usage management
