Alibaba Cloud Global Traffic Manager (GTM) is a cloud-based DNS traffic management service for applications and websites spread across multiple endpoints. Teams can route requests geographically or by proximity, and use weighted, sequential, or round-robin policies. It supports Alibaba Cloud and non-Alibaba Cloud IP addresses, including hybrid-cloud disaster recovery scenarios, making it relevant to teams coordinating regional infrastructure across providers. GTM returns endpoint addresses through DNS; clients connect directly to those endpoints rather than passing application traffic through GTM.
Health checks are a central part of GTM’s failover model. It can check endpoints with ICMP, TCP, or HTTP/HTTPS probes from multiple regions. When an address or pool is unhealthy, GTM can remove it from DNS responses or switch traffic to a backup address pool. Address pools group service endpoints by region or ISP. This combination suits teams that need regional steering and DNS-level recovery, but it is not an application proxy and does not itself carry client sessions. Buyers who need traffic inspection or proxy-based controls should consider a different type of service.
Published subscription pricing starts with Standard at $20 per month and includes 100 detection tasks per month. Ultimate costs $140 per month and also includes 100 tasks. Additional packages of 100 tasks per month cost $12 for a Standard instance or $48 for an Ultimate instance; the vendor also documents pay-as-you-go billing, with rates dependent on usage. DNS traffic analysis and resolution logs are billable options. GTM integrates with Alibaba Cloud DNS and Simple Log Service and is available through web and API interfaces. It is a fit for teams wanting DNS-level health-based failover and flexible routing policies; task consumption and optional logging should be part of the cost decision.
