Alibaba Cloud Data Lake Formation is a managed cloud service for organizing, governing, and optimizing data lakes and lakehouses. It is aimed at teams running analytics, machine learning, log analytics, or multimodal data workloads on Alibaba Cloud. Its scope covers catalogs, databases, tables, metadata, permissions, storage analysis, and automated maintenance rather than serving as only a metadata catalog or query layer. Web, API, and CLI management interfaces give teams several ways to manage the environment.

Governance and maintenance are central strengths. Catalog-, database-, and table-level access controls support structured permission management, while automatic metadata extraction helps organize data-lake files. Storage optimization includes file compaction plus cleanup for snapshots, partitions, and orphan files. Multimodal management adds image search, full-text search, and visual exploration. Open table support and both batch and streaming ingestion fit workloads that need more than scheduled file processing. Teams already using Alibaba Cloud services can connect DLF with EMR, Realtime Compute for Apache Flink, MaxCompute, Hologres, Spark, Hive, Presto, Impala, and DataWorks.

The commercial model uses usage-based billing rather than fixed product tiers. Pay-as-you-go compute provides postpaid billing, while subscription compute deducts usage from an allowance before excess usage is billed pay-as-you-go. Cold Archive storage uses locally redundant storage. Published rates vary by region, storage class, redundancy type, and usage; the lowest listed compute rates are for China (Ulanqab), and the lowest listed storage rate is for US (Virginia). DLF is a strong fit for organizations committed to Alibaba Cloud and needing governance plus automated lake maintenance. Teams seeking a free entry plan, a fixed tier structure, or a platform-neutral deployment model should consider alternatives.
