Akamai Cloud Compute provides virtual machines, also called Linodes or compute instances, for hosting Linux distributions and running applications on Akamai’s cloud infrastructure. It is suited to developers, production applications, databases, media workloads, and enterprise deployments. Supported distributions include Ubuntu, Debian, and CentOS Stream, while Cloud Manager provides a web-based management option. The platform is available through web, Linux, and API workflows.
The published plans show a progression from Nanode 1 GB, with shared CPU, 1 GB RAM, 1 vCPU, 25 GB storage, and 1 TB transfer, through Linode 2 GB, 4 GB, 8 GB, 16 GB, 32 GB, 64 GB, and 96 GB configurations. The listed shared CPU plans scale to 96 GB RAM, 20 vCPUs, 1,920 GB storage, and 20 TB transfer. Akamai also lists dedicated CPU, high-memory, GPU, and accelerated compute families. This breadth makes the service a practical fit when one provider needs to cover varied Linux workloads rather than a single narrow hosting use case.
Management and automation are central to the offering. Cloud Manager, the Linode API, and Linode CLI support provisioning and administration, while the Terraform Provider and Ansible Collection connect the service with infrastructure-as-code workflows. Private networking, cloud firewalls, block storage, object storage, and backup services extend the infrastructure beyond basic virtual machines. Pricing is usage-based, with monthly caps and hourly rates depending on the plan and region, and the service has no perpetual free plan. Choose Akamai Cloud Compute when broad compute, networking, storage, and automation options matter; a simpler hosting product may be a better match for projects that need only a basic Linux server.
