Aircrack-ng review
A focused, free toolkit for assessing wireless network security.
Reviewed by iTechGuides Editors · Editorial team · Updated Oct 2026
Aircrack-ng is an open-source suite of command-line tools for assessing WiFi network security. It is designed for wireless penetration testing specialists who need tools for monitoring, capturing, manipulating, and analyzing 802.11 traffic. The suite supports Linux, Windows, and macOS, with Linux as its primary environment, and it can be scripted for repeatable wireless assessment workflows.
Its main strength is the depth of its wireless toolkit. Aircrack-ng covers 802.11 packet capture and export, wireless packet injection, replay and deauthentication attacks, fake access point creation, wireless-card and driver capability testing, monitor-mode management, capture-file decryption, and wireless network graphing. It also supports WEP and WPA/WPA2-PSK cracking. The software is free and open source, making it suitable when a focused wireless assessment toolkit is more important than a commercial interface or broader testing coverage.
Aircrack-ng is a narrow fit within penetration testing software. Its capabilities center on wireless network testing, while web application testing, API testing, and mobile testing are outside its stated scope. The on-premise deployment model and command-line workflow also make it less suitable for teams seeking a browser-based platform. There is no built-in finding management or evidence capture, so teams that need centralized reporting or organized assessment records should choose a broader penetration testing platform. Pick Aircrack-ng for focused WiFi security work; choose an alternative when the engagement spans multiple application types or requires integrated findings workflows.
