AFWall+ review
Detailed outbound app rules for rooted Android users who want network visibility.
Reviewed by iTechGuides Editors · Editorial team · Updated Oct 2026
AFWall+ is an open-source firewall frontend for rooted Android devices. It lets privacy-conscious users allow or block network access for individual applications, with separate controls for Wi-Fi, mobile data, VPN, tethering, and LAN connections. Its audience is technically comfortable Android users who want application-level outbound control rather than a simple device-wide network switch.
Its main strength is the depth of its rule model. AFWall+ supports IPv4 and IPv6, connection and packet logging, notifications for blocked connection attempts, multiple firewall profiles, and rule import and export. Custom iptables scripting extends the configuration options, while boot-time rule application helps preserve the selected policy after restarting the device. Tasker and Locale integrations add automation options for users who want firewall profiles or rules to change with device conditions.
The trade-off is a focused scope. AFWall+ requires root access, runs only on Android, and its rule direction is outbound, so it is not a general-purpose firewall for inbound traffic or multiple operating systems. Users who want detailed per-application controls across different connection types should find its feature set well aligned with that need. Those who cannot root their device, need inbound filtering, or want cross-platform coverage should choose a firewall designed around those requirements instead. The free offering provides the core product, while a paid donate version offers additional features.
