Adobe Digital Editions is a free ebook reader for consumers, library borrowers, and publishers reviewing digital books. It supports EPUB, EPUB3, and PDF files across Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android. Readers can organize titles into custom bookshelves, search full text, add bookmarks, highlights, and notes, and download books for offline reading. It also supports borrowing ebooks from public libraries, transferring ebooks to supported eReader devices, and printing subject to publisher restrictions.
Its strongest fit is cross-platform reading with a practical set of organization and annotation tools. Books can be fulfilled for online or offline reading, and books can appear across devices when accessed with the same user ID. That makes it suitable for readers who move between desktop and mobile devices, as well as people who borrow digital books from libraries. EPUB3 support adds coverage beyond standard EPUB files, while custom shelves can be sorted by title, author, or publisher.
Adobe Digital Editions stays focused on reading rather than paid content services or a broader integration ecosystem. It has no paid tiers, so the full product is available without a subscription, but there is no tiered path for additional functionality. Adobe states that ongoing support, downloads, account management, and future maintenance transitioned to Wipro Engineering in July 2025, while the application remains usable. New sign-ins use a ByteBooks ID. Choose it for free EPUB and PDF reading, offline access, annotations, library borrowing, and supported device transfers across major platforms. Readers seeking paid upgrades or broader platform integrations should consider a different type of ebook software.
