4Pane review
A focused free Linux manager with powerful twin-pane controls, but no cross-platform reach.
Reviewed by iTechGuides Editors · Editorial team · Updated Oct 2026
4Pane is a free desktop file manager for Linux users who prefer configurable twin-pane navigation. Its interface combines directory trees with detailed file lists, giving separate views for browsing and file operations. The design fits solo users and small teams that want a traditional, information-dense workspace rather than a cloud-based file hub. Standard file operations are supported alongside navigation aids such as bookmarks, user-defined GoTo buttons, and recently visited directory history.
Its strongest case is the concentration of advanced file-handling controls in one application. Multiple undo and redo actions cover most operations, including deletions, which can make routine cleanup less consequential. 4Pane can create and extract tar and zip archives, and it can browse or alter files inside many archive types. Batch renaming and duplication support prefixes, suffixes, increments, and regular expressions. User-defined tools can run commands or scripts on selected files, while the built-in terminal and command line keep shell workflows close to the file list. Removable devices can also be mounted and accessed through toolbar icons.
Platform reach is the main boundary: 4Pane is designed for Linux desktops, so users needing Windows or macOS support should consider a cross-platform alternative. Installation materials include binary packages for multiple Linux distributions, source code, and instructions, but the product remains oriented toward users comfortable choosing a Linux package or building from source. Documentation is the listed support channel, and broader integrations are limited. Choose 4Pane for detailed local file work, archive handling, and command-oriented customization; look elsewhere for multi-platform deployment, extensive ecosystem connections, or integrated AI features.
