The “Processing Power Compared” graphics place a phone, game consoles, and supercomputers side by side—but their ratios are claims printed in an infographic, not a universal ranking of how fast those systems perform. The panels mix floating-point throughput, CPU clock speed, and RAM, which describe different capabilities and cannot be collapsed into one score without a defined test.

What the Processing Power Compared infographics show

University lecture materials reproduce panels credited to Experts Exchange. The examples compare a Samsung Galaxy S6 with PlayStation 2 systems, Tianhe-2 with PlayStation 4 systems, and an earlier Cray-2 supercomputer with an Apple iPhone 4. The reproductions are secondary sources: City University of Hong Kong’s lecture PDF is dated 2020, and Boston University’s available lecture PDF is dated 2018. Those dates identify the lecture materials, not the infographic’s original publication.

Panel Displayed figures Displayed ratio Reproduction
Samsung Galaxy S6 and PlayStation 2 Galaxy S6: 34.8 GFLOPS and 3 GB RAM; PlayStation 2: 6.2 GFLOPS (GPU) and 32 MB RAM “1 = 5” City University of Hong Kong, 2020 lecture PDF
Tianhe-2 and PlayStation 4 Tianhe-2: 33.86 PFLOPS and 1.4 PB RAM; PlayStation 4: 1.84 TFLOPS (GPU) and 8 GB RAM “1 = 18,400” City University of Hong Kong, 2020 lecture PDF
Cray-2 and Apple iPhone 4 The panel shows the systems and a ratio; comparable numeric specifications are not stated in the Boston University reproduction. “1 = 1” Boston University, 2018 lecture PDF

The ratios above are reproduced as the panels display them. The lecture sources do not establish that each figure came from equivalent tests, or document the calculation behind the ratios. Treat the values as historical infographic content, not verified results or current product specifications.

Why FLOPS, clock speed, and RAM are separate measures

FLOPS: floating-point operations per second

FLOPS describes a rate of floating-point calculations, often used when discussing processors and parallel computing. A stated peak or theoretical rate does not by itself predict how quickly a particular program will run. The result depends on factors such as the kind of calculation, numerical precision, hardware utilization, and the system’s overall design. The infographic reproductions do not provide enough methodology to determine whether their FLOPS figures use matching workloads or precision.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

CPU clock speed: frequency, not a complete speed score

Clock speed indicates how frequently a processor’s clock cycles, usually expressed in hertz. It does not state how much work a processor completes per cycle, how many cores are doing the work, or whether an application can use those cores effectively. A frequency comparison across different processor architectures therefore cannot establish which system is faster for every task.

RAM: capacity, not processing rate

RAM capacity describes how much working memory a system has available; it is not a measure of calculation speed. More memory can help a system hold larger data sets or keep more work accessible, but capacity alone does not show memory bandwidth, latency, or application performance. A phone’s system memory and a console’s memory also should not be assumed to serve identical roles simply because both are reported in bytes.

How to read the comparisons without overclaiming

  1. Identify the metric. Check whether a number refers to FLOPS, CPU frequency, RAM capacity, or another specification. Do not treat unlike units as interchangeable.
  2. Check what hardware the number describes. A figure labeled GPU is not automatically a CPU result, and the infographic’s mixed labels make that distinction important.
  3. Ask whether the conditions match. A meaningful performance comparison needs a defined workload, benchmark, precision, and testing conditions. The reproduced panels do not supply enough detail to validate their ratios on that basis.
  4. Use a task-specific benchmark for a practical decision. For gaming, scientific computing, or another real workload, performance on that workload is more useful than a broad ratio assembled from unrelated specifications.

Modern GPU terminology adds another distinction: an integrated GPU is part of the CPU package and shares system memory, while a discrete GPU is a separate component with dedicated video memory. GPUs are designed for graphics and parallel-compute work, but this hardware context does not verify the infographic’s historical figures or make unlike system comparisons equivalent. See the Intel hardware guide to GPUs.

What the graphics cannot establish

The original Experts Exchange page was not retrieved, so the original publication date, data provenance, benchmark software, precision, power conditions, and method used to calculate the ratios remain unverified. The Boston University lecture material also contains a separate chart tracing Top500 supercomputer performance over time. That historical growth chart is distinct from the Cray-2-versus-iPhone infographic panel; it should not be read as evidence for that panel’s “1 = 1” ratio.
