If your priority is keeping a reminder provider from receiving your task contents, choose an app that stores tasks on your device and does not send them to a provider-operated sync service. But “zero servers” is not a universal definition of the best reminder app: it can mean no provider backend, no sync at all, or sync through infrastructure you control. Those choices affect backup, recovery, and access across devices.
What “zero servers” means for a reminder app
A local-first app uses your device as the primary place to work with task data. The term alone does not tell you whether sync is available, or who operates it. A local-only design can avoid a provider’s task cloud; optional sync may instead use the app provider, an encrypted relay, your own server, or a local network.
These distinctions matter more than a “private” label. An app can store tasks locally by default and still offer cloud sync. Conversely, using a server for sync does not automatically mean the server can read your tasks: that depends on the encryption design, key custody, and implementation.
Recommended Free Tools
- Local-only: Tasks stay on the device, with no app sync service. You need a separate way to back up or move them.
- Local-first with optional provider sync: The app works locally but can send data to a service for multi-device access.
- Encrypted sync: Tasks sync through infrastructure, while the app claims they are encrypted so the service cannot read them. Check how keys are created, stored, and recovered.
- User-controlled sync: Sync may use a server you operate, a local network, or a service you select. This shifts some control—and maintenance—to you.
“No servers” therefore is not synonymous with “no sync.” For example, dayGLANCE documents browser-local storage as well as self-hosting and optional Nextcloud or WebDAV sync. Kairos describes offline use and optional synchronization through Nostr relays chosen by the user. Those options still rely on infrastructure beyond a single device.

Why keeping task data local can help
A to-do list can reveal routines, appointments, relationships, health concerns, work plans, and places you visit. If an app never sends task contents to its provider, that provider has less opportunity to receive those contents through the app’s sync service. This is a reduction in exposure, not proof that the device or every other service involved is secure.
The principle is consistent with data minimisation, but the law does not require serverless reminder apps. Regulation (EU) 2016/679, Article 5(1)(c), says personal data should be “adequate, relevant and limited to what is necessary in relation to the purposes for which they are processed (‘data minimisation’);” The same article also addresses purpose limitation, storage limitation, and integrity and confidentiality.

Local storage changes where responsibility sits. If the only copy is on one phone or computer, losing that device may mean losing the list. A provider-free design can be a good privacy fit while still being a poor practical fit if you need dependable recovery, household sharing, or seamless access across several devices.

| App | Documented storage or sync approach | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| 2Do | Its privacy page says the company operates no hosted sync service and does not process or transmit task data through its own servers. | The vendor also describes location-based reminders on iOS, macOS, and Android. Check how you will back up or sync before relying on a single device. |
| Everdo | The product page describes offline operation, with optional end-to-end encrypted sync or local network sync. | Confirm current platform and feature details directly with the vendor before choosing it. |
| Kairos | Project documentation describes offline use without an account, encrypted local storage, and optional sync through Nostr relays. | Relays are external infrastructure; the project’s descriptions are not an independent audit. |
| Haven | Its site describes local-first encrypted storage and optional sync. | The site says there is no native mobile app yet, which may rule it out if you need mobile access. |
| SynDiary | Its documentation says its encrypted database is on-device and its team runs no backend that stores app data. | Verify how the app handles export, backups, and device replacement for your setup. |
| dayGLANCE | Documentation describes browser-local storage, self-hosting, and optional Nextcloud or WebDAV sync. | It is an example of alternatives to a vendor-operated task cloud, not a serverless design in every configuration. |
| 123 ToDo | Its site claims client-side AES-256-GCM encryption and describes Cloudflare D1-based sync and Google Drive AppData sync. | Because the documented sync options use cloud services, it is not a “zero servers” example. The encryption statements are vendor claims, not independently verified here. |
| PrimeTask | Its security page describes a local-only desktop app with encrypted local databases. | Those are vendor claims; the documentation cited does not establish an independent audit. |
How to choose the right design for your needs
Start with how you actually use reminders, then decide what data path you are willing to accept. A single-device user with a separate backup routine may prefer local-only storage. Someone who depends on several devices may accept encrypted or user-controlled sync, provided they understand the recovery and key-management trade-offs.
- Decide whether you need sync. If you use one device, ask whether manual export or backup is enough. If you use several, identify which devices must stay current and whether a local-network option would work.
- Find out where data goes by default. Read the privacy and sync documentation. Distinguish on-device storage from optional sync, and identify the service operator if sync is enabled.
- Check account and key requirements. Determine whether an account is required, who holds the encryption keys, and what happens if you forget a password or lose access to a device. “Encrypted” alone does not explain whether the provider can recover data.
- Test backup, restore, and export. Before adding important tasks, find the export format and make a backup. If possible, test restoring it on another device. A sync feature is not automatically a complete backup or a reliable recovery plan.
- Match platform and reminder support. Confirm the app covers your operating systems and the reminder features you rely on, such as location triggers. Treat feature lists as version- and platform-specific.
- Assess evidence, not just labels. Look for implementation details, public source code where applicable, and published independent audits. A product’s “zero-knowledge,” “encrypted locally,” or “end-to-end encrypted” wording is a claim to evaluate, not independent proof.
What privacy labels cannot tell you
The cited product pages describe different subsets of these details, so they do not support a complete, like-for-like security score. In particular, the available vendor and project descriptions do not provide a common independent assessment of encryption implementations, backup behavior, or notification reliability. No app should be treated as audited solely because its site uses privacy-focused language.

Also consider data outside the task database. Notifications may appear on a lock screen; operating-system backups may copy app data; calendar integrations, widgets, analytics, or shared accounts may create additional data paths. Review the app’s permissions and the relevant device settings, and avoid putting highly sensitive details in a reminder unless you are comfortable with those paths.
