Before building a private PDF/DOCX comparison tool, validate two separate claims: that it catches the changes people need to review, and that sensitive document data stays where you say it does. Local parsing is technically feasible, but neither a browser-side library demo nor a competitor’s privacy statement proves that your product will compare real files correctly or make no network requests.

Define what “private” means in observable terms

Write a narrow promise you can test, such as: “Selected PDF and DOCX files are compared on this device.” Then specify what happens to each data type—not just the original file.

  • Document content: Do file bytes or extracted text ever leave the device?
  • Identifiers: Are filenames, file paths, document titles, or metadata transmitted?
  • Temporary and saved data: Where are temporary files, comparison results, and exports stored, and when are they removed?
  • Diagnostics: Can error reports, crash logs, analytics, or support uploads contain document content or identifying details?
  • Network behavior: Does the app contact a server for updates, licensing, telemetry, or any other purpose?

Keep three claims distinct: files are processed locally, the app works without connectivity, and the app makes no network requests. One does not prove the others. For example, Draftable says its desktop comparison, conversion, and rendering happen locally and states, “Your documents never leave your machine.” Its security documentation also says periodic license verification requires connectivity and optional telemetry can be disabled. That is a vendor description of Draftable, not evidence about a new product or an independent security assessment. Draftable desktop security documentation

If the tool is a web app, client-side comparison alone does not settle the privacy question. The app still needs scrutiny for delivery, analytics, error reporting, browser storage, and other requests. Make the promise match the tested behavior, and state any exclusions plainly.

Choose a first release scope users can understand

“PDF and DOCX comparison” can mean anything from comparing extracted text to detecting layout and formatting differences. Define exactly what a first version accepts and what it reports. In particular, distinguish PDFs with selectable text from scanned pages, which may contain only images.

Start with the document cases you intend to support

A modest initial scope might compare selectable text in PDFs and ordinary DOCX paragraphs, while explicitly excluding scanned PDFs, password-protected documents, embedded objects, or formatting-only changes until each is supported and validated. These are examples to consider, not assumptions about what your implementation can handle.

Adobe describes separate comparison handling for reflowable reports and scanned documents; scanned pages are compared as captured images, with text treated separately. A tool that only extracts selectable text should say that scanned documents are not supported rather than implying OCR or image comparison. Adobe Acrobat comparison documentation

Decide what “a change” means

Specify whether the output should detect text edits, insertions and deletions, formatting, layout, moved passages, or some combination. Also decide whether a reviewer needs character- or word-level detail, a side-by-side view, a redline, filters, or an exportable result. A single diff score does not tell users which differences they can inspect or share.

DOCX extraction is not the same as Word-faithful comparison. Mammoth can accept DOCX data in a browser and extract raw text, but its documentation says raw-text extraction ignores formatting. It also warns that it does not sanitize the source document. If using it as a parsing layer, treat formatting coverage, hostile-file resilience, and unsupported elements as engineering and product-scope questions—not solved problems. Mammoth.js documentation

Build a small test set with known answers

Before expanding the feature set, assemble a consented collection of representative document pairs. For every pair, record the changes you expect the tool to find and the ones it should ignore. Include cases that expose the limits of ordinary text extraction.

For each pair, compare the expected changes with the actual output. Record missed changes, false positives, ordering problems, and whether a reviewer can navigate to and understand each difference. Check export behavior too: a comparison result is itself sensitive data and should receive the same privacy scrutiny as its input files.

PDF.js provides a core layer for parsing and interpreting PDFs and a display layer for rendering and document information; its documentation describes supplying PDF binary data as a Uint8Array. That makes a browser-side parsing path plausible, but does not establish a complete comparison engine or universal coverage of PDF features. PDF.js Getting Started documentation

Test the privacy promise across the whole workflow

Inspect actual network activity and stored artifacts while loading files, comparing them, exporting results, and triggering error handling. Repeat with connectivity disabled. The goal is to verify what leaves the device and what remains on it for the exact app build and configuration you plan to ship.

Canon Canoscan Lide 300 Scanner (PDF, AUTOSCAN, Copy, Send)
  • Scanner type: Document
  • Connectivity technology: USB
  • With Auto Scan Mode, the scanner automatically detects what you're scanning
  • Digitize documents and images
  1. Inventory the data: List file bytes, extracted text, filenames, metadata, temporary data, diagnostics, and outputs.
  2. Exercise normal and failure paths: Load, compare, export, close, reopen, and trigger representative errors. Observe network requests and local storage at each step.
  3. Repeat offline: Disconnect the device and check which operations continue, fail, or queue data for later transmission.
  4. Check retention and cleanup: Look for temporary files, cached content, and saved results after the workflow ends.
  5. Document exceptions: Disclose any licensing, update, telemetry, or diagnostic connections that remain, and provide controls where available.

This is a validation procedure, not a claim that a particular implementation has already passed it. A clear privacy statement should describe both document handling and the app’s other network activity.

Use existing products as baselines, not proof of superiority

People already have comparison options. Use them to understand expected workflows and features, then record the exact edition and platform used for each baseline. Vendor documentation describes advertised capabilities; it does not establish which product is more accurate in a controlled comparison.

Baseline Documented capabilities Scope to keep in view
Microsoft Word legal blackline Creates a comparison result in a third document; offers controls for comments, formatting, text, and character- or word-level detail. Microsoft says the default new-document workflow leaves the source documents unchanged. The cited Microsoft support page applies to Word for Microsoft 365, Word 2024, and Word 2021 desktop for Windows. Microsoft Word comparison guidance
Adobe Acrobat Pro Documents PDF comparisons, text-only comparison, settings by document type, scan/image handling, a summary, side-by-side review, and filtering. This is a PDF comparison baseline; the cited page does not establish DOCX comparison. Adobe says its Text Only option is designed for documents of 250 pages or more; that is product guidance, not an independent performance benchmark. Adobe Acrobat comparison documentation
Draftable Desktop The vendor advertises PDF and Word inputs, side-by-side and redline views, local processing, and PDF export. Its product page lists Windows 10+, Office 2007+ for Office formats, and USD $129/year as accessed on 2026-10-07; commercial terms can change. Its separate security page says periodic license verification requires connectivity. Draftable Desktop · Draftable security documentation

Use the same representative pairs and review criteria across baselines where their supported formats allow it. Compare whether each finds the known changes, how clearly it presents them, and what platform or connectivity conditions apply. Do not claim your tool is more accurate or more private without evidence from a suitably controlled test.

Decide whether the validated problem is worth building

Proceed only when you can state a specific user need, define the supported file cases, and show that a prototype meets both its comparison and privacy promises on representative examples. If users mainly need the workflows already documented in Word or Acrobat, a new tool needs a clearly identified gap—such as a supported workflow or deployment constraint—not merely a claim that local processing is possible.

Keep the first release promise narrower than the long-term product idea. Expand coverage only when the relevant document cases, error paths, output, and network behavior have been tested and the limits can be explained accurately.
