In Studio Mode, PRISM media sources do not play automatically after they are added. Then check that source’s volume and mute controls, confirm the intended audio devices are selected, and compare the new file’s audio with the previous one. The title alone does not identify the cause.
1. Make sure the new media source is playing
Start with playback, especially if you replaced the file by removing and re-adding a source. PRISM’s desktop guide, Using Media Source, says media sources in Studio Mode do not play automatically after they are added.
- If you use Studio Mode: after adding the new source, click Apply so the change takes effect.
- To have the source start when it becomes active: open the media source’s properties and uncheck Restart playback when source becomes active, as described in PRISM’s guide.
- Check that the clip is playing in the preview or program output. A source that is stopped cannot send its audio to the mixer.
If the source is visibly playing but there is still no sound, continue to its mixer controls.
2. Check the changed source in the Audio Mixer
PRISM’s official FAQ explains that source volume is adjusted with the bars beneath each audio source and that the sound icon toggles mute. Inspect the new media source’s controls—not only the microphone’s.

- Confirm the source is not muted.
- Raise its volume if the level is very low.
- Watch its meter while the video plays. If the meter does not move, the source may not be playing or may not be producing audio. If it moves, audio is reaching the mixer, so check routing and transmitted-audio settings next.
3. Confirm audio devices and the transmitted mix
PRISM advises checking that audio is not muted and that the correct input and output devices are selected. A device-routing problem is separate from a media source that has not started or whose own mixer channel is muted. Review the selected devices in PRISM’s audio settings, then check what is being sent using Audio Mixer > Settings > Advanced Audio Settings.
Monitoring can help diagnose the mix, but treat it as a test rather than a fix. PRISM cautions that monitoring may cause echo or howling if speaker output feeds back into a microphone or if the audio system repeats the signal. If monitoring introduces an echo, turn it off and correct the feedback path.

4. Check whether the new video file contains audible audio
If playback is active, the source is unmuted, and the device selection looks right, compare the changed file with the old one. Play the new file outside PRISM and confirm that it has an audible audio track; then compare its source-meter activity in PRISM with the previous file if you still have it.
PRISM’s desktop guidance confirms that Media Source can play local video or audio files, but it does not establish a particular codec or file-format fault as the cause of missing audio in this situation. A file that is silent outside PRISM points to the file rather than the stream mixer. If it has sound outside PRISM but the source meter stays inactive in PRISM, keep the investigation focused on that source and its playback settings.

5. Separate silence from delay or stuttering
Delay and performance symptoms are not the same as a completely silent source. PRISM’s desktop guide to optimizing live streaming performance notes that large media files can use more CPU and recommends matching media resolution to transmission resolution. If the video stutters or the system struggles, those checks may help; they do not establish why audio is absent.
If sound is present but out of sync, PRISM’s sync troubleshooting guide documents adjusting Sync Offset in milliseconds for timing differences involving external devices. That setting addresses timing, not a source that produces no audible signal.

6. Contact PRISM with evidence if the problem persists
PRISM’s FAQ documents contacting support through the program’s Help / Contact Us route. Include details that help distinguish playback, mixer, device, and file problems:
- Your PRISM desktop version and operating system.
- The changed file’s format or codec, if known.
- Whether the media source is playing and whether its mixer meter moves.
- Whether other PRISM sources have audio.
- Whether the changed file plays with sound outside PRISM.
