In Windows 10 and Windows 11, pressing Shift five times toggles Sticky Keys on or off. Sticky Keys lets you use keyboard shortcuts one key at a time instead of holding several keys together. The shortcut works through Windows; you do not need to install or buy anything.
What the five-press shortcut does
Microsoft lists “Shift five times” as the shortcut to turn Sticky Keys on or off. In other words, if the feature is off, the shortcut turns it on; if it is on, the shortcut turns it off. The behavior is documented for Windows 10 and Windows 11.
Sticky Keys is an accessibility feature for entering commands that normally require multiple keys at once. Microsoft gives Ctrl+S as an example: with Sticky Keys, you can press the keys one at a time rather than holding them down together. This can help people who have difficulty pressing multiple keys simultaneously.

Microsoft’s current shortcut reference confirms the toggle, but it does not guarantee that every Windows setup will show a confirmation prompt or play a beep. An older Microsoft Q&A answer describes those behaviors in its particular context; it should not be taken as a promise about what you will see today.
How to check or change Sticky Keys in Settings
If you want to check whether Sticky Keys is enabled or change its setting, open Accessibility settings with the Windows logo key+U, then open Keyboard. Microsoft’s settings guide uses these paths:
- Windows 11: Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard.
- Windows 10: Settings > Ease of Access > Keyboard.
Look for the Sticky Keys switch. Menu labels can vary as Windows changes, so use the Keyboard page under the version-specific accessibility section if the path looks different.
If pressing Shift five times caused an unexpected change
Open the Keyboard page in Accessibility or Ease of Access settings and check the Sticky Keys switch. If it is on and you do not want to use the feature, turn it off there. You can also press Shift five times again to toggle it off.
If no prompt appeared, that alone does not establish that the shortcut failed: the documented outcome is the toggle, not a guaranteed dialog. Check the setting directly to confirm its current state.
