Transform View is a code-centered way to turn application data into a presentation format such as HTML, XML, or JSON. It is useful when a reusable renderer can express the output more cleanly than a markup-heavy template; for pages with substantial semi-static HTML, Template View is often easier to maintain.
What Transform View means
Giorgio Sironi defines Transform View as a view mechanism that processes a data structure one element at a time and transforms it into an end-user representation, such as HTML. The input might be a domain object or a collection containing domain elements; the output is presentation data rather than the original model.
A minimal example is PHP’s json_encode(): it transforms an array into a JSON string. That demonstrates the basic idea, though it does not navigate a complex object graph or make decisions about how each domain element should appear. Sironi’s explanation and PHP example appeared in 2010 in “Practical PHP Patterns: Transform View”.
How the 2010 PHP example works
Sironi’s sample defines a User with getName() and getCity() accessors. A TransformView uses PHP’s ReflectionClass to inspect methods, selects names that begin with get, calls those methods, and places their returned values into rows of an HTML table.

The example makes the pattern’s central move visible: the view is executable code that discovers data and builds the representation. Sironi explicitly describes the sample as incomplete because it does not handle relationships between objects.
This is a historical illustration, not drop-in production guidance. The displayed code inserts values into HTML without showing output escaping, method-visibility checks, or a modern templating and security approach. In production, decide deliberately which data may be rendered and escape output for its destination; reflecting over every getter is not automatically a safe or suitable presentation policy.

Transform View versus Template View
The key distinction is where the response is expressed. Transform View uses programmatic operations on data elements to create output. Template View expresses the representation in a template or script, with insertion points for dynamic content.
| Consideration | Transform View | Template View |
|---|---|---|
| Presentation logic | Lives in transformation code that processes data. | Lives primarily in a markup-oriented template with dynamic insertion points. |
| Static markup | Can be awkward when the output contains extensive semi-static HTML. | Often easier to author for pages with substantial semi-static markup. |
| Reuse and composition | A generic renderer may work across classes; view objects can potentially be selected, swapped, or chained. | Reuse depends on how templates and their shared pieces are organized. |
| Control and coupling | A generic renderer can reduce class-specific code; a class-specific renderer is more coupled but gives finer presentation control. | The template is organized around the representation, with dynamic values supplied for insertion. |
| Output formats | Can produce HTML and may be used for XML or JSON. | Typically chosen when a template naturally describes the target representation. |
Choosing generic or class-specific rendering
Use a generic Transform View when reuse matters
A generic view can discover model data dynamically, using reflection or metadata such as annotations. If one implementation can render several classes in a consistent way, this can reduce duplication. The trade-off is that discovery rules become part of the rendering contract: the view needs a reliable way to distinguish renderable data from methods that should not appear in the response.

A view written for one class is more tightly coupled to that class’s data structure, but it can decide precisely which values to show and how to arrange them. This is a useful trade when the representation is specific or the model’s accessors do not map neatly to presentation fields.
There is also a design mismatch to consider. Domain objects prioritize modeling and information hiding, while infrastructure classes may expose richer navigation APIs. Rendering a domain object consistently across multiple view types can therefore be harder than rendering data from an infrastructure-oriented structure.

Where the pattern helps—and where it does not
- It can help when a reusable transformation applies to multiple classes or when treating rendering as an object enables useful selection, swapping, or chaining.
- It may be a poor fit when a page is mostly semi-static HTML; a template is often easier to write and review in that case.
- It is not automatically simpler for structured markup. Sironi notes that even XML can sometimes be easier to emit tag by tag than to manage through a DOM transformation.
