There is no single reliable India-wide monthly bill for running an OBS playlist stream around the clock. The cost depends on the computer and other equipment’s average electricity draw, your local tariff and how your rented room is billed. A useful first estimate is average wall power in watts × 0.72 = kWh over 30 days for a setup running 24 hours a day. Multiply that kWh by the marginal per-unit rate that actually applies to you.
Estimate the monthly electricity use and cost
Use the average power drawn at the wall by the equipment you want to include—not the computer’s power-supply rating.
Monthly energy (kWh) = average wall power (W) × hours per day × days ÷ 1,000.
For continuous operation over a 30-day month, that simplifies to average watts × 0.72 = monthly kWh. The results below are illustrative arithmetic, not claims about a typical OBS computer. The ₹3–₹8 per kWh range is a scenario for showing how the calculation works, not a claimed India-wide tariff range.

- Various Monitoring Parameters: The power meter plug can monitor the power (W), energy (kWh), volts, amps, hertz, power factor, cost, minimum and maximum power (W), cumulative days and time of your appliances. By switching 7 display modes, you can easily know the various parameters while the appliance is working. The home energy monitor can also calculate and display how much power your appliance uses and how much electricity bill it cost in cumulative time
- Upgraded LCD Display: With large screen size 2.36 inch x 1.85 inch, clearer monitor backlit, our electrical usage monitor can display the data clearer and more visible no matter day or night. 180°full wide viewing angles is great for reading and recording the data in any angles. No need to stand on the front of the display and bend over to read the numbers
- Adjustable Backlight Time: Our upgraded watt meter has 5 options of backlight time. The default backlight time duration is 10 minutes(bL-0). If you want to change the backlight time, you can press and hold "UP" and "DOWN" button at the same time to enter backlight time setting, then press "UP" and "DOWN" to select the backlight time (bL-0 =10 minutes, bL-1=1 hour, bL-2=4 hours, bL-3=8 hours, bL-4=always on), finally press the "COST" to save the backlight time settings
- Overload protection: When the power of the appliance exceeds the overload power, the LCD will display “OVERLOAD” to warn the user. All the buttons will quit working and can only be workable when you lower or remove the load power. The default overload power is 3680W and is adjustable from 0 to 3680W. In general, you need to set the overload power to 1800W before using. Just press the "function" button for more than 3 seconds to enter the setting
- Data Memory Function: The wattage meter will record your power consumption data when you remove it from socket, or remove appliances from the electricity monitor. You can directly see the last data when you use it next time. This function can also automatically save the data when there is a sudden power failure
| Assumed average wall draw | Energy over 30 days | Energy charge at ₹3–₹8/kWh |
|---|---|---|
| 30 W | 21.6 kWh | About ₹65–₹173 |
| 60 W | 43.2 kWh | About ₹130–₹346 |
| 100 W | 72 kWh | About ₹216–₹576 |
| 200 W | 144 kWh | About ₹432–₹1,152 |
These figures cover energy charges only. They do not include fixed charges, duties, cess, monthly adjustments, slab effects, subsidies, a landlord’s markup or interruptions that reduce runtime. If the stream runs fewer than 24 hours a day, use the actual hours in the formula.
Why the amount on your bill may differ
Your OBS setup has no standard wattage
OBS does not have one fixed electricity draw. The computer’s components and the load from encoding affect consumption. A monitor, speakers, router, capture devices and lights add to the total if they are included in the setup. Decide whether you want the cost of the computer alone or of all the equipment used for streaming. A power supply’s nameplate wattage is its rated capacity, not a measurement of what the computer continuously draws.

- Multi-function power monitor: Our electric usage monitor can monitor the power (W), electricity(kWh), voltage(V), frequency(Hz), current(A), power factor(PF), unit price($/kWh), total cost($) of your appliances. By switching 8 display modes, you can easily know the various parameters while the appliance is working. The “electricity” mode can calculate and display how much power your appliance uses. And the “total cost” mode will show how much electricity bill it cost in cumulative time
- Overload protection: When the loading power of the appliance is over the default overload threshold 1800W, the whole display with backlight and the word “OVERLOAD” will keep flashing to warn the users. Please turn off the appliance for safety concern
- Premium Material: The whole body of our energy meter is made of high-quality ABS material. It makes our home electricity usage monitor more long lasting, fireproof and anti-drop. The standard US socket and plug is suitable for all US standard appliances
- Backlight Display: With white backlight and black words, the LCD display of our home power monitor can display the data clearer and help you to read the data easier no matter day or night. The backlight will only lights up when the device is connected to AC power. If no button is pressed, the backlight turns off automatically after 10 minutes. You can also press the "UP" button to turn off the backlight manually, and press any button to turn on backlight again
- Easy to reset: No reset tool needed, our appliance power usage meter is easy to reset. You can press the “M” button for 5 seconds directly to reset the device. After reset, all cumulative data (electricity quantity, cost) will be cleared, and all settings will be restored to factory settings
No representative OBS playlist-stream wattage is established here, so treat the wattage rows above as scenarios until you measure your own equipment.

Being a tenant does not automatically mean you should be charged a commercial tariff. For example, Odisha’s FY 2025–26 order treats a dwelling used solely for residential purposes as domestic whether rented or owned; it excludes temporary-stay hotels and guest houses. That is an Odisha example, not a rule for every state. Check the order that applies where you live: Odisha Electricity Regulatory Commission.
If your room has a submeter or shares a common meter, ask the landlord how units are counted, what per-unit rate is used and whether fixed charges or other bill items are divided among tenants. A plug-in meter can show energy use, but it cannot tell you what rate the landlord will charge.

Time-of-day pricing may or may not apply
Government policy describes state-specified solar-hour tariffs 10–20% below normal rates and peak-hour tariffs 10–20% above them. For smart-meter users, the tariff takes effect after a smart meter is installed. Whether this affects your bill depends on the applicable state order and your setup; do not assume it applies to a rented room. See the Ministry of Power’s time-of-day tariff release.

Measure the equipment instead of guessing
- Choose what to count. Connect only the computer to measure the computer’s use, or include its monitor, router and other streaming equipment if you want the complete setup total.
- Use a compatible plug-in energy meter. Check that it suits your socket and the load rating. A meter such as the one described on the Yantram PM10 product page can report watts and accumulated kWh.
- Measure normal operation over several representative days. Leave the playlist running as usual. If consumption varies, use accumulated kWh over the elapsed hours rather than relying on a momentary watt reading. The U.S. Department of Energy explains why fluctuating loads should be measured over time and averaged: measuring energy use.
- Calculate average power if needed. Divide the meter’s accumulated kWh by elapsed hours, then multiply by 1,000 to get average watts. For example, 4.8 kWh over 48 hours works out to 100 W on average.
- Estimate the month and cost. Multiply average watts by 0.72 for a 30-day, 24/7 estimate, then multiply the resulting kWh by your applicable marginal energy rate. Use the bill or landlord’s stated submeter rate—not an assumed national average.
A plug-in meter measures connected equipment, not the tariff category or the terms of your rental billing arrangement. Ask the landlord for the latest bill or how the submeter reading is converted into your charge.
