A POV action cam is an action camera set up to record a point-of-view shot: footage from the perspective of the person wearing it or the equipment carrying it. “POV” means “point of view.” It describes the recording angle and use, not a separate camera technology or product class.
What makes an action camera POV footage?
An action camera is a compact camera that can be attached to a person or equipment. When mounted so it records from that wearer’s or equipment’s perspective, it is being used as a POV camera. GoPro describes a wearable camera as one mounted on a person so it can record hands-free; its examples include head, chest, helmet, and bite mounts. GoPro’s wearable-camera guide presents these as mounting approaches, not a distinct camera format.
The viewpoint depends on the mount. A helmet or head mount can follow the wearer’s line of sight; a chest mount records from a lower, torso-level position; and a handlebar, pole, or similar equipment mount records from that equipment’s position. The result is not necessarily identical to what the wearer sees: camera height, angle, and field of view all affect the frame.

Where can you mount a POV action cam?
- Helmet or head: Places the camera near the wearer’s gaze and is useful when the aim is to show what is ahead. GoPro’s helmet-camera guidance discusses placement and fit, while emphasizing safety as the priority. GoPro’s helmet-camera guide is manufacturer advice, not an independent helmet-safety standard.
- Chest: Gives a lower perspective that can include the wearer’s hands or equipment as well as the scene. The angle will differ from eye level.
- Activity equipment: A bar, pole, or similar mount makes the camera follow the equipment rather than the wearer’s head. GoPro lists a handlebar/seatpost/pole mount for tube diameters of 9–35 mm; that specification applies to this particular product and should be checked against the current listing and your equipment. - Other hands-free positions: Bite mounts and other compatible mounts can provide a first-person angle for particular activities. GoPro’s catalog includes a Bite Mount Hands-Free POV Mount; current availability and compatibility can vary.
How to choose a POV setup
Start with the perspective you want, then check whether the mount fits both the camera and the activity. Stabilization can matter when footage includes movement; DJI identifies stabilization as an important action-camera feature, but that is manufacturer guidance rather than an independent comparison. - Position and framing: Decide whether you want a head-level, chest-level, or equipment-level view. Consider whether the frame should show your hands, controls, or more of the surroundings.
- Compatibility and attachment: Confirm the mount fits the camera model and attaches securely to the helmet, clothing, or equipment you plan to use.
- Stabilization: Consider how much camera movement the activity creates and what stabilization options the camera provides.
- Conditions and durability: Check whether the camera and mount are suitable for the activity’s exposure to water, dust, impact, or temperature. Do not assume that every action camera or mount has the same protection.
- Handling and field of view: Check the framing and controls before starting. A wide view captures more around the camera, but the mount’s position and angle still determine what appears in the shot.
POV action cam versus a regular action camera
There is no essential hardware distinction in the phrase. The same action camera can record POV footage when mounted for a first-person perspective and other kinds of footage when placed elsewhere. The term describes how the camera is used and what the resulting shot represents.
Because “POV action cam” is a use description, it does not identify a particular model, guarantee a specific image quality, or establish that a camera is suitable for every activity. Choose the camera and mount based on compatibility, conditions, framing, and the safety requirements of the activity.
